NEUBAU delivered the architectural designs to support the feasibility study for the development of the Battery Green Cultural Quarter and renovation of the Marina Theatre.

The site strategy picks up from the recommendations of the masterplan that preceded this study and builds on them with more detail, elaborating on the forms and treatments that are required to articulate the site into a coherent and well-functioning Quarter. A clear reoccurring theme across the non-residential uses was a need for space to be flexible to respond to market changes. The language of industrial sheds and multi-storey car parks exists in abundance on and around the site and the proposed architectural approach aims to borrow from this vocabulary.

The Marina Theatre is the point of origin of the Cultural Quarter and its longstanding cultural offer in Lowestoft must be recognised in the context of this study. The building would benefit greatly from an upgrade through internal improvements and lateral expansion into the adjacent Zenith building. The Marina Theatre Trust have identified the vast majority of these areas of opportunity and together with some further recommendations these have been implemented as part of the overall Cultural Masterplan.
