NEUBAU successfully proposed and implemented an alternative accommodation for a porter’s lodge at the Cambridge University College of Hughes Hall by installing a modified shipping container. The proposal and its realisation was received as a unique solution that unlocked the project from a budget perspective for the client but also as an elegant and appropriate design solution in the context of a Grade II listed university building by the council’s conservation officers.

Hughes Hall was until now the only College of Cambridge University without a Porter’s Lodge. In 2018, expansion of its porter’s team meant that the college required a fast and short term solution to this shortfall. NEUBAU’s proposal for the bespoke conversion of a shipping container was received extremely well from the onset by the college as well as the planning and conservation officers.

Plan

The Porter’s Lodge has been divided into 3 parts: the reception area with pigeon holes to the front, the central porters’ office area, and the parcel and storage area at the rear of the structure. The large doors of the shipping container remain operational, serving as a secondary access to the storage area, and the linearity of the structure has been utilised to separate the pedestrian and vehicular traffic flows.
