At the heart of the brief for the redesign of Cambridge Market Square was the requirement to achieve a flexible civic space. The 24/7 open air market is an established institution in Cambridge that contributes significantly to the character of the city centre. Over the years, through habit and convenience, the stalls have claimed the square beyond the operating hours of the market blocking any civic use of the space in the evenings. NEUBAU was tasked with designing a new type of stall for Cambridge that would release the square for public use and occasional events without hindering the operation of the market. 2 options were developed and proposed converging into a 3rd that combined operational pragmatism and established aesthetics while reimagining how a civic reclamation of the square could coexist with the market.
