STATUS:

LOCATION:

Lowestoft, UK

YEAR:

2022-23

Commissioned by Orsted and designed by Alex at LDA Design and NEUBAU these nearshore artificial structures aim to support breading pairs of Kittiwakes to increase population numbers and offset any impact from windfarms near their fishing waters in the North Sea. They utilise a monopile foundation to reference and capitalise on Orsted’s technical expertise of installing large off-shore wind turbines. Their octagonal plan anchors the orientation of the structure with the cardinal and ordinal directions of the compass in a site that is void of topography and visible inhabitation. The compass oriented faces help with scientific classification when studying nesting patterns while the nests are individually accessible from the inside of the structure through a special operable, one-way vision, panel system developed by NEUBAU making them a world first ornithological study facility out at sea.

Kittiwakes are the UKs most oceanic gull, only returning to coastal areas to nest between March and September. They eat fish, shrimps and worms, and do not scavenge like other gulls. Sadly, due to a steep decline in population numbers over recent decades, kittiwakes are now listed as vulnerable and at risk of extinction, and have therefore been placed on the UK’s Red List for Birds of Conservation Concern.
