The strength of the Low Line lies in both its structural and conceptual identity – with its repetition of arches and fascinating pocket spaces posing great potential for alternative events to unfold within its spinal anatomy. There are manifold positive localised initiatives at present – many independent and start-up businesses have found a home within the Low Line. The area presents many urban distractions and opportunities for re-routing footfall to competing venues and activities. We recognise development putting pressure on the Low Line’s opportunities for public use and would propose mainly intermittent or temporary use of arches and proxy sites. While we seek to address disconnected elements and propose potential and preferred pedestrian and cycling routes, the physical path should not be doing all the work – rather, the Low Line is strengthened conceptually through means of way-finding and repeated, recognisable physical and digital components. The Low Line would thus be future-proof to change and expansion, unlocking potential sites over time.
