A proposal for a competition to design and programme a Volcano Museum in Mývatn, Iceland. Neubau opted for a landscape driven design approach, with the main Interior focus on the Content and Arrangement of the Volcano Exhibition Hall. Several introductions beyond the brief followed, including a landscaped sculpture rock garden, a library and a mock-lab for visitors to explore the micro universe of thin sections. We sought out the experience and guidance of consultants, geologists and seismologists on all things volcanic, with the brief demanding a high level of detail and resolve.

The concepts of a Sanctuary for Travellers, and a Habitat for Wildlife meet in the form of an enclosed rock/sculpture garden, with the exhibition ‘Rock’ suspended above the landscape.

The museum is located along Route 1, a circular route around the island, linking the North East with Reykjavik and the international airport. The region in itself is attracting with its natural beauty, bird diversity, geology, hot baths and ample opportunity for walking/hiking trails. With the setting against Hverfjall Krater and the Lava Fields in the foreground, and mountain ranges as backdrop, we propose to open one elevation to engage with, and learn from the context. The geological fields surrounding the site are worthy of exploration on foot and virtually, with the volcano located 3.3km from the museum.

We propose a Wunderkammer of different types of local rocks, which can be touched and explored. A Mock-Laboratory offers insights into the life and work of a volcanologist studying rocks and thin sections. Augmented Reality headsets provide information relation to the landscape, geology and volcanic activities in the region. A children’s zone allows for space to play messy and experiment. The Café and Panorama Terrace offer surround views of the conservation area and Hverfjall, not to mention a moment to take in the open sky and Aurora Borealis phenomenon which, along with a visceral fascination with volcanic activity, has inspired the heightened colour scheme of this proposal.
